As a Wisconsinite, I'm going to agree with sandhill crane is perfect for Wisconsin.

The Northern Cardinal is currently the state bird of Illinois. I think the American Goldfinch would be a good choice for the state bird of Illinois or perhaps, the Eastern Bluebird or even the Western Meadowlark.

While I agree that the Gila woodpecker would be a great choice for Arizona, I doubt you’ll get the state residents to back you up; woodpeckers - around here, at least- seem to really like making holes in people’s houses, sheds, etc., and are therefore kind of unpopular. I love them, but …. We could also have the massive crows voted in, they’re very interesting.
